WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. President Joe Biden signed a new executive order on Wednesday that he said aims “to protect access to reproductive healthcare” after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to abortion.
Biden, America’s second Catholic president, inked the decree despite criticism from his denomination and the Vatican.
In June, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops devoted its national meeting to discussing Biden and his public support of abortion rights.
The Catholic Church opposes abortion and teaches that life begins at conception. But Biden on Wednesday condemned the decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade which enabled abortions nationwide.
Republicans “don’t have a clue about the power of American women,” a frail Biden said before signing his order. “Last night in [the U.S. state of] Kansas, they found out,” he added, referring to an abortion referendum.
More than 900,000 Kansans – about a third of the state’s population – voted Tuesday on whether the right to abortion should be removed from Kansas’ constitution.
VICTORY FOR ABORTION?
Almost 60 percent of those casting ballots voted against the change, a victory for pro-abortion activists, official results showed.
Biden’s order directs the health and human services department to consider ways to expand coverage for patients traveling out of state for “reproductive healthcare.”
Biden’s order does not detail how this could be achieved as currently, government-subsidized Medicaid health insurance plans cover medically necessary abortions in only 16 states.
They do not reimburse patients who leave their state to seek an abortion.
Following the Supreme Court’s June decision overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion was banned in at least ten states and partially banned in another four.
