JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – The Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday it has dismantled more than 26 kilometers, or about 16 miles, of underground terror tunnels in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire agreement with Hamas went into effect last October.
According to the IDF, the operations have focused on areas east of the “Yellow Line,” the ceasefire boundary where Israeli forces have continued operating against what they describe as immediate security threats. In the past week alone, Israeli troops destroyed more than one kilometer of tunnel infrastructure in northern Gaza.
The military said its forces first map the underground routes, rig them with explosives, collapse the tunnels, and then seal entrances with concrete and debris to prevent Hamas from reusing them.
“IDF troops will continue to operate to remove any immediate threat,” the military said, according to i24NEWS.
The announcement comes as Israel continues to insist that Hamas must be disarmed as part of any lasting postwar arrangement in Gaza. The tunnel network has long been one of Hamas’ most important military assets, used to move fighters, hide weapons, store supplies, and conduct attacks while embedding its operations beneath civilian areas.
